Last year, our government has decided October 2 as Batik Day.
Well, it’s about time. Batik is like, our national uniform. All kinds of people wear it, and on it we show no boundaries.
Mothers use it almost everyday as house dresses, schools and companies use it once in a week, and we wear it to special occasions such as weddings (yeah, mostly Indonesian wears batik, not gown or suits) or meetings, or any other occasions. And nowadays, even youngsters wear batik to the malls.
Batik used to be so dull for our youngsters. Batik felt ceremonious, not cool, and awkward. We barely like the idea of wearing batik to school even it’s just once a week. Why is that so?
Back then, there are just a few designs for batiks, and all of it only met older people’s taste. Whether it’s collar shirt, long skirts, house dresses, all of it are boring. But then, young designers tried to break out from the shell and came up with a genius idea: modern designs to batik. And guess what? It was a bomb!
The markets went crazy over this new style of batik. Youngsters now wear batik tank tops, batik mini skirts, batik one piece, batik sweater, and all of it rocks! We can now inherit our national uniform with style!
Anyways, I don’t wear Batik like everyday, but I do wear it sometimes. I have this one piece that is so cute, and I bought it only for 50.000 IDR. It’s totally cheap and I love it!
But something is bothering my mind. Before the Indonesia-China free market agreement, cheaper batik from China is already everywhere in our market and it’s so hard to distinguish. I don’t even know where my batik comes from. And now, after we agreed to the agreement, what’s our batik destiny will be?
The goverment did claimed batik as national heritage, and we have done a good job as proud citizens, but will they do something to protect it?
I really hope so.
